Gender: Male Religion: Jewish Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Doctor Nationality: United States Executive summary: Found H. Pylori near stomach ulcers For years, coroners had noticed a tendency for spirochete bacteria to be present in autopsies of patients with ulcers, but they generally ascribed this phenomenon to post-mortem buildup. Between 1939 and 1941, Freedberg performed and published research documenting his finding the bacteria in living patients, but this was never confirmed by other researchers and he was discouraged from further research. In 1983, J. Robin Warren and Barry J. Marshall publish a letter in The Lancet describing this apparent infectious cause of ulcers, and in 1984, their formal paper is published in the same journal. Like Freedberg's earlier work, it is met with skepticism. In subsequent years, consensus turns, and Warren and Marshall are jointly awarded the 2005 Nobel Prize in Medicine. Until the time of his death, Freedberg remained extremely active. Brother: Milton Wife: Bea (m. circa 1935, d. 2000, two sons) Son: Leonard Son: Richard
