In the course of the legal proceedings, he lied under oath about his sister Ethel Rosenberg's involvement in the plot. As a result, both she and her husband were convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage, the only such conviction to arise in the whole of the cold war. After being released from prison in 1961, Greenglass lived in New York under an assumed name, until finally in 1996 he admitted his perjury to a New York Times reporter.
