50 Cent AKA Curtis Jackson Born: 6-Jul-1975 Birthplace: Queens, NY
Gender: Male Race or Ethnicity: Black Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Rapper Party Affiliation: Republican Nationality: United States Executive summary: Wanksta, P.I.M.P. 50 Cent is tough indeed, even if (as some say) his tough publicity is somewhat exaggerated. His early years were in a rough neighborhood, he never knew his father, and his mother -- purportedly a hooker, drug addict, or both -- died when he was 8. After that, young Curtis was raised by his grandparents in a more middle-class neighborhood. Convicted of dealing crack, he did time in a "boot camp" prison, and upon exiting renamed himself 50 Cent -- "a metaphor for change". He was signed by Columbia Records in 1999, and recorded an album, Power of a Dollar. In 2000 he was famously shot nine times in front of his grandmother's house, and Columbia quietly canceled his contract while he was recovering. Bootlegs are available, but the album was never released.
After that, 50 Cent decided to market his own music, and his independent CD Guess Who's Back? was a quick underground success. Eminem heard it and pronounced 50 Cent his new favorite rapper. He was quickly signed to a million-dollar-plus joint deal with two labels, Shady Records and Aftermath, and Get Rich or Die Tryin, his big-time debut, was 2003's best-selling album. Someone tried to shoot 50 Cent in September 2003, but missed.
In 2009, provided on-camera narration for a sex tape as "Pimpin' Curly". The woman appearing in the sex tape sued, and in 2015 a jury ordered Jackson to pay $5M restitution. He filed for bankruptcy shortly after.
