Discarding any batch suspected of impurities, he earned a reputation as the most reliable and high-quality supplier of his product. His customers included San Francisco-area hippies and dealers, author Ken Kesey, and rock stars from The Beatles to Steely Dan, as well as Jimi Hendrix, Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones, and Pete Townshend of The Who. He was also, of course, a friend, fan, and supplier of acid for The Grateful Dead, even paying the band's rent before they became successful, and serving for several years as their sound engineer.
