Ian Carmichael specialized in playing bumbling innocents in droll 1950s comedies. His better films include the military spoof Private's Progress and its sequel I'm All Right Jack, the academic slapstick Lucky Jim, the pastoral comedy Heavens Above, and School for Scoundrels or How to Win Without Actually Cheating. He also appeared in occasional dramatic films, including the WWII prison escape The Colditz Story, and co-starred with Peter Cushing and Donald Pleasence in the horror anthology From Beyond the Grave.

Carmichael's most famous work was on television, where he played Bertie Wooster in a mid-1960s sitcom based on P. G. Wodehouse's Jeeves and Wooster stories, and a short-lived 1970 sitcom called Bachelor Father, with a similar premise but otherwise unrelated to John Forsythe's late-1950s American sitcom of the same title. Carmichael also starred as Lord Peter Wimsey in several well-received BBC adaptations of Dorothy L. Sayers' mystery novels in the 1970s.

After announcing his retirement in the mid-1980s, he narrated the late-1980s stop-motion TV series The Wind in the Willows, and took occasional parts on television, including a recurring role as the secretary, T. J. Middleditch, on the long-running British hospital drama The Royal. He died on 5 February 2010.
