Born in St. Petersburg, and moved to Paris in 1912 at the age of eighteen. He designed fashions for Paris couturier Paul Poiret, and stage designs and theater costumes for the Folies-Bergere. Illustrated nearly 250 covers for magazine Harper's Bazaar. In the 1960s his popularity was on the increase, and he began issuing limited-edition lithographs and sculptures. His enormous body of work includes prints, posters, serigraphs, lithographs, fashion designs, magazine covers, statues, bronzes, sculptures, jewelry, and set designs. He was introduced to the American and British publics largely by an influential 1967 gallery exhibition by Grosvenor Gallery in New York and London. He continued to work throughout his lifetime, beginning jewelry design in his eighties and concentrating on producing graphics, lithographs and serigraphs in the last thirty years of his life. He died at age 97 in 1990. Chalk & Vermilion Fine Arts, the parent company of Martin Lawrence Galleries, is reportedly designing an Erte-themed hotel in Las Vegas. Is the subject of books:
