Mendicant monk, resident for most of his life at the monastery of SS. Giovanni e Paolo, at Venice. Best known for authoring the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, published in an extravagant edition by Aldus Manutius in December 1499. Written in a bizarre argot which smooshes together Greek rootwords and Italianate syntax, the Poliphili has avoided translation for much of its existence, the better to be admired for its fantastic typography and woodcuts. A translation of the entire text was completed in 1999 by esoteric scholar Joscelyn Godwin.
