Frederick Weyerhaeuser was raised in Germany, and quit school at the age of twelve after his father died. He immigrated to America in his early twenties, finding employment at a brewery in Erie, Pennsylvania, and later at a saw mill in Rock Island, Illinois. At the mill his hard work was rewarded with quick advancement, from millman to night foreman to payroll manager, and finally he was put in charge of the saw mill and later a lumber yard. He lived frugally and saved his money until he was able to purchase a small saw mill with his brother-in-law, and by the mid 1880s he controlled numerous mills and lumber yards in Idaho, Minnesota, Oregon, Washington, and Wisconsin. By the time his holdings were consolidated as the Weyerhaeuser Company in 1900, his mills and logging operations dominated America's lumber industry.

His son Charles was a co-founder and first President of the Potlatch Lumber Company in 1903. Another of the elder Weyerhaeuser's son's, Rudolph, was President of Potlatch (now Potlatch Corporation) in the 1930s.
