A first-round draft pick in 1944, by 1945 Van Buren led the league in rushing, scoring, and kickoff returns. He brought the Eagles to win the NFL Championships in 1948 and 1949. Playing in a pre-television era, his salary topped out at $15,000. He suffered from dementia for several years prior to his death in 2012.
