Robert Sheckley was a master of speculative fiction imbued with a strong sense of humor and absurdity. He wrote numerous well-received novels, but was better known for his hundreds of short stories, many of which ended with an unexpected twist from, as he described it, "the three horsemen of my own apocalypse". His stories appeared frequently in all the classic pulp sci-fi magazines, and in more mainstream magazines such as Esquire and Playboy. Early in his career he wrote more than a dozen episodes of TV's Captain Video, and several of his works were adapted into motion pictures, including the splendid La Decima Vittima (The Tenth Victim), based on Sheckley's short story "The Seventh Victim", and lesser efforts including Disney's Condorman and Freejack with Mick Jagger. Before selling his first short story, he served in the Army and worked as a bartender, landscape gardener, milkman, office clerk, and pretzel salesman. Sheckley also wrote under the pen names Phillips Barbee, Ned Lang, and Finn O'Donnevan, and his daughter Alisa Kwitney and ex-wife Jay Sheckley are also writers of speculative fiction.
