[1] Because Spacey is never seen in public with partners and he refuses to discuss his private life, rumors abound. A 1997 article in Esquire magazine implied homosexuality. In 2004, he was mugged at 4:30AM in a London park, but Spacey declined to report the incident, eliciting further rumors. Finally, in 2008, a series of pictures surfaced from Croatia of Spacey in a bar, engaged in some manner of unexplained but odd horseplay with another man's naked backside. In October 1999, asked by Playboy about gay rumors, he replied in part, "It's not true", and in 2000, his Academy Award acceptance speech referred to a girlfriend.
