He completed two moon walks and assisted crewmates Dick Gordon and Pete Conrad with lunar surface experiments and in the installation of the first nuclear power generator station on the moon. Becoming an astronaut in 1963, Bean was part of the third group of astronauts selected for missions. He served as backup command pilot for Gemini 10 and backup lunar module pilot on Apollo 9.
Bean's other accomplishments include:
- Cumulative hours of space flight equals more than 1671.
- Cumulative EVA time equals more than 10 hours.
- Flew over 5500 hours in 27 different aircraft.
- Helped establish 11 world records in aeronautics and space.
Bean was also notable for his role as the Mission Commander of Skylab 3 in 1973. The second man to lead a Skylab mission, Bean spent 59 days in orbit. Under his leadership, his crew accomplished an unsurpassed 150% of their pre-mission goals.
Resigned from NASA in June 1981 to devote more time to painting, he has also produced children's books and is a popular inspirational speaker and commentator, drawing on perspectives gleaned from his work on the Apollo and Gemini missions and his trip to the moon. Tom Hanks describes him as "the only artist to have walked on the moon". Bean was portrayed by Dave Foley in the HBO film series From The Earth To The Moon which depicted the Apollo 12 mission.
