Triola and Marvin had been living together for six years when he suddenly dumped her for an old flame. Marvin continued to provide Triola an allowance for more than a year, but inevitably he cut her off. Three months later, she filed suit, seeking alimony payments of $1.8M despite the fact that she and Marvin were never married -- thus coining the term palimony. Represented by celebrity divorce lawyer Marvin Mitchelson, Triola's suit gave birth to a sensational trial which revealed intimate details of her relationship with Marvin. Eventually, the court upheld the palimony concept, and Triola was awarded $104,000, but the sum was overturned on appeal as she had no explicit contract with Marvin in regard to the division of property. She later formed a more explicit partnership with, though again did not marry, the actor Dick Van Dyke.
