Her parents had a photography studio, and because Alyson was always well-behaved in front of the cameras, they "volunteered" her for an educational film titled Active Parenting. Her parents divorced when Hannigan was two. As a kid, Hannigan did commercials for McDonald's, Oreo cookies, Delta Airlines, and Six Flags amusement parks. She starred in the Meg Ryan role in a London stage production of When Harry Met Sally, opposite Luke Perry, and then spent nine years starring in the hit sitcom How I Met Your Mother, with Neil Patrick Harris.
