Burgess was fired from the faculty of UC Berkeley in 1894 after his involvement with the toppling of a horrifically ugly statue. He coined the term "blurb" in 1907, when he claimed "Miss Belinda Blurb" as the author of a blurb that he obviously wrote himself.
I never saw a purple cow,
I never hope to see one;
But I can tell you, anyhow, I'd rather see than be one.
As Burgess grew to hating this quattrain, he wrote another, more ominous one:
Ah yes, I wrote The Purple Cow,
I'm sorry now, I wrote it!
But I can tell you, anyhow, I'll kill you if you quote it.
