As a figure-painter he shows in his work much imaginative power and a very personal style, and his pictures are for the most part illustrations of classic myths treated with attractive fantasy. An able draughtsman and a fine colorist, he was ranked among the best artists of the British school. He was admitted to the Royal Academy in 1885 and made an academician in 1895. His work was influenced highly by the members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. He befriended Lawrence Alma-Tadema. In his lifetime painted over two hundred paintings among which may be noted ar Hylas and the Nymphs, The Lady of Shalott, Penelope and the Suitors, Sleep and His Half-Brother, Death, Ophelia, La Belle Dame Sans Merci and Echo and Narcissus.
