She was born and raised in Los Angeles, decided at 13 she wanted to be an actress, and attended the Los Angeles High School of the Arts. She appeared in numerous school plays, and even took acting lessons outside of school.
As her graduation approached, DuVall sent out her head shots and minimal résumé to agencies out of the phone book. "One agent called me," she says. "He was a drunk and I [signed] with him for a while. Then I met my manager and she introduced me to my current agent, and everything kind of happened from there."
Her first feature film was the gourmet cheesy Little Witches in 1996, wherein naughty naked girls at a Catholic boarding school dabble with witchcraft. Other Clea classics include How to Make the Cruelest Month (she played a neurotic who wants to fall in love and quit smoking), The Faculty (she was the geeky outcast who understood sci-fi), and But I'm A Cheerleader (she played Natasha Lyonne's roommate and love interest at the gay deprogramming center).
Her more prestigious films include The Laramie Project and The Grudge. She played a compulsive liar in Girl, Interrupted. She was also a tarot card reader in HBO's vivid Carnivŕle, and played an invisible girl in an early episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
