José Carreras AKA Josep Maria Carreras Born: 5-Dec-1946 Birthplace: Barcelona, Spain
Gender: Male Religion: Roman Catholic Race or Ethnicity: Hispanic Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Singer Nationality: Spain Executive summary: The third tenor José Carreras first sang in public at the age of eight, performing "La Donna e Mobile" on Spanish Public Radio. At 11, he sang at the famous Grande Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. He made his professional debut there as Flavio in Norma, and attracted the attention of soprano Montserrat Caballé, who played the title role. They performed in more than 15 different operas together over the years, including Carreras' foreign debut in London.
He was accused of lip-synching when, after damaging his voice performing Aida at the 1979 Salzburg Festival, he was a guest on The Des O'Connor Show in London. A woman was heard to exclaim that she could now say she had seen and heard Carreras, and a violinist countered that she still hadn't heard him.
There was a charged rivalry between Carreras, Placido Domingo, and Luciano Pavarotti, the leading tenors in the world -- until Carreras was diagnosed with leukemia in 1987. He underwent chemotherapy and a bone-marrow transplant; after his miraculous recovery, he united with Domingo and Pavarotti as "The Three Tenors". He often performs benefit concerts, with proceeds going to the International Jose Carreras Leukemia Foundation.
