He conducted research into flare stars (variable stars that briefly and unpredictably increase in brightness), faint blue star-like objects that emit myriad radio waves and ultraviolet radiation, blue galaxies (distant clusters of young stars), and planetary nebulae (older stars that glow more brightly after shedding their outer gaseous layers). Haro and George Herbig, working independently, discovered what are now called Herbig-Haro objects, the small bright nebula formed when material jettisoned at high speed from a new star collide with the interstellar medium. He is the namesake of the Guillermo Haro Observatory near Cananea, Mexico. His wife was the journalist Elena Poniatowska.
