In 1966, working with Benno Muller-Hill (b. 1933), Gilbert designed a new procedure called equilibrium dialysis, to determine the degree of ion bonding by protein. In 1976, working with Allan Maxam (b. 1942), he developed a DNA sequencing method, based on chemical modifications of DNA and followed by its subsequent cleavage at specific bases. In 1977 he proposed a theory of exon shuffling, in which different exons are sometimes mixed, either within a gene or between two nonallelic genes. He won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1980, sharing the honor with Paul Berg and Frederick Sanger. Father: Richard V.
