During WWII he broke both ankles after parachuting from his aircraft, so the Wimbledon win was a great surprise (Schroeder turned professional after receiving a $25,000 offer to do so.) However, Schroeder treated tennis as a pasttime rather than a full time occupation, and he retired from the sport in 1951. Even so, he is considered one of the greatest players of the early era of the sport.
