Gender: Male Religion: Presbyterian Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Business Nationality: United States Executive summary: Founder of Campbell Soups Joseph Campbell was a fruit merchant who, in 1869, purchased half-ownership of Abraham Anderson's small canning factory, at 41 N. 2nd Street in Camden, New Jersey. Their Anderson & Campbell Company produced packaged condiments, jellies, minced meats, tomatoes, vegetables, and yes, soups, but the two men argued about how the business should be run, and in 1876 Campbell bought Anderson's shares and re-named the operation Joseph Campbell & Company.
In 1882 the company took on three new partners, including Arthur Dorrance, and became the Joseph Campbell Preserving Company. It was Dorrance's nephew, John T. Dorrance, who invented the process for condensing soup, which gave the Campbell Company a crucial competitive advantage -- with most of the water removed, they could ship and sell their soups for far less than other canned soupmakers. Campbell retired in 1894, and after his death in 1900 the company was re-named Joseph Campbell Company. As soup became its key product the firm was re-named Campbell Soup in 1922.
