Gender: Male Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Painter Nationality: France Executive summary: Dwarfish painter of France's Moulin Rouge Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was a boy when he broke both legs. His bones did not heal correctly, and eventually they stopped growing altogether, leaving an embittered Toulouse-Lautrec with the short, stumpy legs of a child and the abdomen of a full-grown man. Deprived of a "normal" life, he devoted himself to his art. More often than not, the subject of his art was the Moulin Rouge ("red windmill") a club in Paris' 18th arrondisement and a symbol of the Bohemian lifestyle of late 19th century France.
He frequented the Moulin Rouge, drinking heavily of alcohol and absinthe, and depicted it in his art as a place of decadence and ruin; indeed, it is widely believed that the syphilis that killed him was given to him by a prostitute whose acquaintance he made there. Father: Comte Alphonse de Toulouse-Lautrec Mother: Comtesse Adèle de Toulouse-Lautrec
Armory Show Risk Factors: Alcoholism
