Lloyd Anderson AKA Lloyd Alva Anderson Born: 4-Aug-1902 Birthplace: Roy, WA Died: 13-Sep-2000 Location of death: Seattle, WA Cause of death: Natural Causes
Gender: Male Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Business Party Affiliation: Democratic Nationality: United States Executive summary: Founder of REI Lloyd Anderson was an engineer and amateur mountain climber beginning in the late 1910s, but as his skills grew he became frustrated at the limited availability, poor quality, and high prices of mountaineering gear. In the mid 1930s he began ordering top-caliber European outdoor gear in quantity and re-selling it to other mountaineers, backpackers, and hikers, and in 1938 he incorporated the business as a cooperative, with a shop in his garage, a warehouse in his attic, and an office run by his wife in the kitchen. Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI) had 23 members as it launched, and moved into its own shop (shared with a gas station) less than two years later. Anderson was REI's President while continuing to work as an electrical engineer for Seattle's transit utility until retiring from both positions in 1971. He died in 2000, 98 years of age and having scaled 428 peaks worldwide. With more than 70 stores and almost three million members, REI remains one of America's largest and most successful cooperatives.
