His nomination was blocked by Republican Senator Jim DeMint, alleging fears that Southers might somehow unionize TSA baggage inspectors. Southers has never stated a position on that issue, but while his nomination was blocked, on Christmas Day 2009, Nigerian al-Qaeda terrorist Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab attempted to bomb a Northwestern Airlines flight to Detroit with 278 passengers aboard. Nomination withdrawn on 20 January 2010.
