Gender: Male Religion: Muslim Race or Ethnicity: Middle Eastern Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Royalty Nationality: Saudi Arabia Executive summary: King of Saudi Arabia, 1982-2005 The fourth of five brothers to assume the throne of Saudi Arabia, Fahd lacked formal education except that of the Koran and certain traditions (falconry, etc.) taught him by his father, founder of the dynasty. As a young man Fahd was somewhat dissolute, spending his time drinking, gambling, carrying on as a playboy in Europe and Lebanon. In 1945 he was sent by his father as a delegate to the founding of the United Nations in San Francisco; it is said this trip established in him a great fondness for things American. Fahd served several ministerial positions and became king at the death of his brother, King Khaled, in 1982. During his reign large amounts of money were spent on modernization of the country and its military, but Saudi Arabia was still unprepared when Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait and threatened invasion of the kingdom as well. By necessity, American forces were dispatched to Saudi soil, raising emnity of many Saudis and other Arab nationalists -- including Osama bin Laden, whose main complaint was the American presence on the Arabian peninsula. A stroke in 1995 debilitated Fahd to the extent that he was unable to perform much of his duties, which were assumed by Crown Prince Abdullah, who became King Abdullah upon Fahd's death in 2005.
