William Moon Born: 18-Dec-1818 Birthplace: Hosmonden, Kent, England Died: 9-Oct-1894 Location of death: Brighton, England Cause of death: unspecified
Gender: Male Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Inventor Nationality: England Executive summary: Moon Code (similar to Braille) After a childhood bout with scarlet fever, William Moon lost his eyesight in one eye and gradually the second. Braille had yet to be introduced to England, so in 1845 Moon devised what is known as "Moon Code", an embossed printing style based on simple geometric shapes. It is much easier for a formerly-sighted person to learn Moon Code than Braille, but much more space is required to represent writing than the latter system. In 1858 a Bible transliteration was completed, taking five thousand pages in an unwieldy sixty volumes. After Moon's death in 1894 his daughter, Adelaide, carried on his work. Wife: Mary Ann Caudle (m. 1842, two children) Daughter: Adelaide Moon
