Executive summary: Drummer for The Monkees For a few brief years with Davy Jones, Peter Tork and Mike Nesmith, Micky Dolenz was the drummer for The Monkees, and performed before thousands of fans in sold-out auditoriums. After The Monkees sitcom ended and their music stopped selling, Dolenz performed with Jones and songwriters Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart as Dolenz, Jones, Boyce and Hart, and with Jones and Dolenz's sister Coco as the Laughing Dogs. He has acted occasionally, directed some episodic television, and toured extensively with Jones as the Monkees. Tork and (very briefly) Nesmith briefly rejoined the group in the late 1990s.
In the early 1970s, after Tork and Nesmith had left the Monkees and Dolenz's first marriage was collapsing, he attempted suicide by walking into traffic and sitting down.
Dolenz played Mayor Micky Dolenz on the 1990s TV series Pacific Blue. As of the mid-00s, Dolenz is the morning DJ disc jockey on New York's WCBS-FM, where his Mickey Dolenz in the Morning! airs Monday-Friday from 6-10 AM.
Dolenz's parents were both actors. His father, George Dolenz, had the title role in a 1950s TV series of The Count of Monte Cristo, and was featured in such films as The Strange Death of Adolf Hitler and Vincente Minnelli's Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. His mother, Janelle Johnson, made few films, but one was the memorable monster flick The Brute Man.
