She left that institution when she was not permitted to study under Hans J. Heinz, but later she was able to study privately under Heinz. Her debut in 1963 at the New York City Opera was not followed up with roles befitting her talents, thus Troyanos signed with the Hamburg State Opera to gain exposure in Europe. Even there, the roles were nothing major until a 1966 festival in Aix-en-Provance, where she sang The Composer in Richard Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos. America took notice of her in 1971 with her superb performance at the Kennedy Center as the title role in Handel's Ariodante. The Metropolitan Opera signed her in 1976, where she remained until her early death at age 54 from breast cancer, which had spread to her liver.
