[1] Many published and otherwise reliable sources claim 25 May 1926. But see Miles Davis and Quincy Troupe, Miles: The Autobiography (1990), page 12: "I was born May 26, 1926, in Alton, Illinois, a little river town up on the Mississippi River about twenty-five miles north of East St. Louis." Ian Carr's well-researched work confirms this date. The longstanding error apparently stems from Leonard Feather, The Encyclopedia of Jazz (1958).
