Their journey lasted from 1804-06. They sought the fabled Northwest Passage to Asia. As a young man he managed his family's 2000 acre plantation, and developed an interest in botany, science, and mineralogy. Lewis joined the army and became a captain in 1800. He was private secretary to Thomas Jefferson beginning in 1801, and was made governor of the Louisiana Territory in 1807.
