Gender: Male Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Labor Leader Nationality: United States Executive summary: UMW executive, murdered For seven years, Joseph Yablonski had been President of UMW District 5, but differences with UMW President W. A. Boyle brought about Yablonski's dismissal. Boyle was never a popular figure, and Yablonski challenged in the 1969 UMW Presidential election, losing 2-to-1. The election had been rigged, and Yablonski asked the US Department of Labor to investigate. But three weeks after the election, Yablonski, his wife, and their 25-year-old daughter were murdered at their home in Clarksville, Pennsylvania. The three hitmen were quickly caught. In 1972, a US District Court Judge overturned the 1969 election, and Arnold Miller defeated Boyle by a wide margin. The money to kill Yablonski was traced to $20,000 embezzled by Boyle and paid to UMW executive Albert Pass, who had hired the murderers. Pass was convicted of murder in 1973, and Boyle was convicted of murder in 1974. Boyle spent the remainder of his life in prison.
