Executive summary: A Baldwin Brother

Alexander Baldwin is best known for playing icy, smarmy, self-satisfied characters, like the sales manager who offered the steak knife incentive plan in Glengarry Glen Ross. His father was a high school history teacher who also led the school's drama club. As a struggling actor Baldwin worked as a busboy at New York's famous Studio 54, but says he had to quit because seeing all the ongoing sex left him perpetually horny.

He studied political science in college, and on a lark auditioned for the acting program at New York University, where he was "blown away" when they offered him a full tuition scholarship. His education was interrupted when he was hired for the daytime soap The Doctors in 1980. When that show was cancelled he starred in a prime time drama, Cutter to Houston, as a young doctor convicted of writing illegal prescriptions but given a second chance to practice medicine in rural Texas. That show was quickly cancelled, and Baldwin was soon seen on Knots Landing as a slithery TV preacher revealed to be the illegitimate son of Julie Harris and half-brother of Joan Van Ark. After a few TV movies and a Broadway run in Loot he played the ghostly husband of Geena Davis in Beetlejuice, and charlatan Jimmy Swaggart in Great Balls of Fire with Dennis Quaid. He landed his first starring role as Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan in The Hunt for Red October and then, to Hollywood's amazement, Baldwin turned down the sequel, handing the part to Harrison Ford.

He has occasionally played good guys since then -- the mysterious hero The Shadow with Penelope Ann Miller, the crusading district attorney in Ghosts of Mississippi with James Woods, war hero James Doolittle in Pearl Harbor, and the conductor in the kiddie film Thomas and the Magic Railroad with Peter Fonda. Audiences, though, seem to prefer Baldwin as a bad guy, and he is always enjoyable in any villainous part. He played the psychotic thief and murderer at the center of Miami Blues with Jennifer Jason Leigh, a surgeon with an oversized ego in Malice with Nicole Kidman, the conceited star with a penchant for young girls in State and Main with Philip Seymour Hoffman, a wicked neighbor in The Cat in the Hat with Mike Myers, the casino boss who takes advantage of hard-luck friend William H. Macy in The Cooler, and Howard Hughes's main competition in The Aviator with Leonardo DiCaprio.

Baldwin belatedly earned his BA in Drama in 1993, writing a thesis on "The Method" acting style which paid particular attention to the work of his Glengarry Glen Ross co-star Al Pacino. Now primarily a supporting actor, Baldwin had a recurring part on Will & Grace, and played Tina Fey's arrogant boss on the sitcom 30 Rock.

He was married to movie star Kim Basinger from 1993 to 2002, and they were frequent fodder for gossip magazines. They have remained a headline couple even after splitting, with messy custody battles and mutual nasty allegations.

Known for his outspoken liberal politics, Baldwin writes a column at The Huffington Post and has hinted at an eventual second career in politics. He wrote a 1998 episode of Law & Order, in which suspicions of murder were cast on a gossip columnist. He has never been shy about poking fun of his own image, and is among the most frequent celebrity hosts on Saturday Night Live. Among his funniest SNL moments, he played a Scoutmaster making a pass at adolescent Adam Sandler, and shared his "Schweddy Balls" with Ana Gasteyer and Molly Shannon.
