Brad Pitt majored in journalism at the University of Missouri, but dropped out two weeks before graduation, when he decided to become an actor. He told his family he was going to attend art design school in Los Angeles, but that was a lie. Instead he drove to California in his Datsun -- nicknamed "Runaround Sue" -- and suffered through months of failed auditions. While he was a struggling actor, he worked as a refrigerator deliveryman, limo driver, and wore a chicken suit to promote El Pollo Loco, a chain of Mexican restaurants.

In his first professional role, he appeared in several episodes of Dallas as a bad influence on Priscilla Presley's young daughter, and he later lured Tracey Gold in an episode of Growing Pains. His first film, with a tiny, uncredited role, was Charlie Sheen's 1987 action movie No Man's Land, and after playing Juliette Lewis's pimp in the TV movie Too Young to Die, Pitt and Lewis moved in together when she was just 17. His first starring role was The Dark Side of the Sun, filmed in Yugoslavia in 1988, but most of the film's footage was lost when civil war consumed the area during post-production. The footage was recovered eight years later, by which time Pitt was a big star, and the film was finally released in 1997.

Meanwhile, after several more small parts, Pitt scored big as a sweet-talkin' hitchhiker who wooed Geena Davis in Thelma & Louise, and as the misfit rebel in Robert Redford's A River Runs Through It. Anne Rice stated publicly that she thought Pitt was all wrong for the film of her novel Interview with the Vampire, but she changed her mind when she saw the movie. In his best performances, Pitt played the naïve new detective in the gruesome Se7en with Morgan Freeman, the mentally disturbed animal-rights activist in Terry Gilliam's Twelve Monkeys, the kid from Hell's Kitchen who became District Attorney in Sleepers with Robert De Niro, the soap salesman who packs a punch in Fight Club with Edward Norton, the boxer with a thick Irish accent in Snatch with Dennis Farina, a poker-playing con man in Oceans Eleven with George Clooney, a prince of Greece in the historical epic Troy with Eric Bana, and the American tourist in Mexico whose wife (Cate Blanchett) is shot in Babel.

In the mid-1990s Pitt was engaged to actress Gwyneth Paltrow, his co-star from Se7en, but she reportedly dropped him when he would not commit to a wedding date. In 2000, Pitt and Jennifer Aniston were married in a glitzy million-dollar ceremony in Malibu. In 2005, as Pitt and Angelina Jolie filmed Mr and Mrs Smith, rumors were rampant that they were having an affair, and months later Pitt and Aniston filed for divorce. He has since adopted Jolie's two children, adopted a third, and fathered three with her. In 2014 they were married.

He has been named People's Sexiest Man Alive twice, in 1995 and again in 2000.

[1] Raised Baptist, but described himself in a 2009 interview with Bild as "probably 20 percent atheist and 80 percent agnostic".
