Bobby Hamilton was a race car driver for NASCAR from 1988 to 2006. He was largely unsuccessful, yet raced a normal schedule in the Winston Cup (NASCAR's highest form of competition, now known as the Nextel Cup) from 1995 to 2002, largely due to his personality and not his performance. He only won four Winston Cup races out of 371 that he competed in, and only finished in the top ten in the Winston Cup's standings in one year, 1996, when he finished ninth.

Towards the end of his career as a race car driver, he started his own racing team, Bobby Hamilton Racing. His son, Bobby Hamilton Jr., raced for the team (now managed by Hamilton Sr.'s wife), but largely cut personal and business ties with his father around 2006.

Hamilton was diagnosed with neck cancer on March 17, 2006, and died on January 7, 2007, surrounded by his family. He was still a car owner and Craftsman Truck Series driver (NASCAR's third-highest form of racing) at the time of his death.

Hamilton dropped out of school at the age of thirteen.
