Rudy Rucker AKA Rudolf von Bitter Rucker Born: 22-Mar-1946 Birthplace: Louisville, KY
Gender: Male Religion: Anglican/Episcopalian Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Novelist, Mathematician, Computer Programmer Nationality: United States Executive summary: Author of Wetware series Rudy Rucker is an American mathematician and science fiction writer, author of the Ware Tetralogy: Software, Wetware, Freeware, and Realware. He has written fiction in what he calls the "transreal" style, where characters and plot elements are based on reality, giving the author's own life the fantasma-allegorical treatment. Alongside William Gibson, Bruce Sterling, and others, Rucker is often credited as a founding father of cyberpunk. Some readers, however, argue that Rucker's work is just too enjoyable and optimistic to be considered cyberpunk, lacking the genre's generally dehumanized, dystopian, and depressing outlook.
Rucker was a Professor of Computer Science at San Jose State University until 2004, where he mostly lectured on computer graphics and game programming. He has published software to study artificial life and cellular automata, in pursuit of gnarly computation. Rucker is co-editor of Speculations in Science and Technology, a scientific journal. He sometimes calls himself Rudy Rucker the Elder, to distinguish himself from his son, Rudy von Bitter Rucker, Jr.
