Executive summary: Discovered the Raman Effect

Awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 for his 1928 discovery of what is now known as the Raman Effect, the shift in wavelength of light after it passes through transparent material. An explosion of interest followed -- within twelve years of the discovery, 1800 scientific papers were produced. As the most prominent Indian scientist and the first Asian to receive a Nobel, Raman assumed the forefront in Indian physics. He founded the Indian Journal of Physics, and established the Indian Academy of Sciences (1934). His nephew, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1983.
