A classically trained pianist, Chatham studied under Morton Subotnick at NYU, and later worked as La Monte Young's piano tuner. By the mid-1970s, Chatham had began to infiltrate the New York City punk rock scene, culminating in Guitar Trio (1977), a piece which fused his earlier just intonation compositions with loud guitar rock.
