[1] Daniel Stashower, Teller of Tales: The Life of Arthur Conan Doyle (2000), pp. 49-50: "The Doyle family remained devoutly Catholic, and it was this connection that they intended to exercise on his behalf -- with introductions to other prominent Catholic families and members of the clergy. To accept this sort of patronage, Conan Doyle felt, would be an act of hypocrisy. He had recently undergone what he called a spiritual unfolding and considered himself an agnostic." However, early in his life, and also for his final fifteen years he explored spiritualism, authoring in 1926 a two volume work, The History of Spiritualism.
