He first concluded that the planet is about 1.6 billion years old, then revised his estimate to about 3 billion years, after recalculating and calibrating his work. When he wrote his first paper on the subject in 1911, most respected scientists believed that the Earth's age was much younger, between 20 million and 100 million years old. With further research since his death the generally accepted estimate has risen to at least 4.5 billion years. He also conducted respected geological research on India and Africa, and he was among the first prominent supporters of the theory of continental drift.
