Patrick J. Fitzgerald AKA Patrick J. Fitzgerald, Jr. Born: 22-Dec-1960 Birthplace: New York City
Gender: Male Religion: Roman Catholic Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Government Nationality: United States Executive summary: Special Counsel for Plame case Appointed 31 December 2003 to investigate the Valerie Plame leak case. During the investigation New York Times reporter Judith Miller was jailed for refusing to reveal her sources to the grand jury. Another reporter, Matthew Cooper was nearly jailed, but his source, Karl Rove, gave permission to reveal. Robert Novak, the one who actually published Plame's name, has apparently testified, though he has not said anything about it. General consensus is that reporters would not be thrown in jail over a matter that wasn't serious, so it is unlikely that the investigation is a mere fishing expedition. Fitzgerald has a reputation for his ability to manage complex, lengthy cases. Earlier investigations and prosecutions include those against John Gambino, former Illinois Governor George Ryan, Omar Abdel-Rahman, and Osama bin Laden. Fitzgerald was also involved in bringing fraud charges against newspaper mogul Conrad Black, and corruption charges against Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich.
On 28th October 2005 Fitzgerald's grand jury issued five felony indictments against Lewis Libby -- perjury, obstruction of justice, and lying to federal officials. Fitzgerald's investigation of the Plame leak cost less than $1M up to the time the indictment was issued. By contrast, Ken Starr's investigation of the far less serious Whitewater scandal of the Clinton administration cost $70M. Father: Patrick Fitzgerald, Sr. (d. 1998) Mother: Tillie (d.)
