Using firearms purchased from some of these traders, local chief Kamehameha was able to conquer the Hawaiian archipelago in April 1810 and establish himself as king. Purchased foreign ships on credit through dealings with white men and other deposed chiefs, leaving a massive debt for his successors to deal with.
