After Captain James Cook's discovery of Hawaii in 1789, the islands were used mostly as a stopping point for fur traders from the Pacific Northwest on their way to Canton, China. Using firearms purchased from some of these traders, local chief Kamehameha was able to conquer the Hawaiian archipelago in April 1810 and establish himself as king. Purchased foreign ships on credit through dealings with white men and other deposed chiefs, leaving a massive debt for his successors to deal with.
