He supported himself mostly as a tutor, and was fired at least once for an affair with the mother of a student. He later slipped into depression, addiction to the bottle and opium, and sporadic fits which may have been caused by epilepsy. Toward the end of his short life he usually slept with his elderly father, who tried to soothe his nightmares and restrained him when his fits became violent.
