Arto Lindsay Born: 28-May-1953 Birthplace: Richmond, VA
Gender: Male Race or Ethnicity: White Occupation: Musician Nationality: United States Executive summary: No-Wave pioneer Arto Lindsay was one of the leading exponents of the aptly-named No-Wave scene that emerged in New York during the latter half of the 1970's. In the context of his first band DNA, Lindsay developed an approach utilizing detuned guitar and arrhythmic stuctures that has since been frequently imitated in avant-garde (and particularly New York avant-garde) circles. For his equally-soothing vocal style, he has cited the primary influence of both James Brown and the involuntary cries of people engaged in coitus.
After periods swinging with the ersatz-jazz ensemble The Lounge Lizards and participating in the raucous funk of The Golden Palominos, Lindsay formed The Ambitious Lovers with keyboardist Peter Scherer -- a project in which the influence of his childhood in Brazil was allowed to bubble to the surface. This influence has become even further prominent in his subsequent solo releases. DNA The Lounge Lizards The Ambitious Lovers The Golden Palominos
