Gender: Female Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Actor Nationality: England Executive summary: Half-Betazoid Deana Troi on ST:TNG Marina Sirtis was born in London to a tailor and his wife, a seamstress. Although she wanted to become an actress at an early age, her very Greek and very traditional mother objected. When she became an adult, Sirtis attended the Royal Shakespeare-affiliated Guild Hall of Music and Drama School, and then joined the Worthington Repertory Theatre, where her first role was Ophelia in Hamlet. Later she played Magenta in The Rocky Horror Show on stage in Europe. Before coming to America, Sirtis had worked on British episodic TV, and her biggest film role was Death Wish with Charles Bronson. Sirtis was in the US, trying with no success to find work as an actress, and had almost no time left on her six-month visa when she auditioned for Star Trek: The Next Generation. She read for the role of Security Officer Tasha Yar, and the half-Betazoid Counselor Deanna Troi, with the ability to tap into crewmembers' minds and determine their true emotions. Nearly broke, she was about to return to London when she was told she had been cast in the latter role. [1] Dispute exists over Sirtis's actual birth date, sometimes given as any year from 1955 to 1962. According to the General Register Office of London, the birth of Marina Sirtis was registered in the spring of 1955.
