Pilot of the Mercury "Faith 7" craft, where he spent 34 hours and 20 minutes orbiting Earth 22 times on 15 and 16 May 1963. He then served as pilot of the Gemini 5 mission commencing 21 August 1965, setting an endurance record of 190 hours and 56 minutes, making him the man with the most hours in space. He retired from active duty in 1970.
