[1] Sources will vary, with 19 February 1912 being the alternative date. William F. Lee, in Stan Kenton: Artistry in Rhythm (1980), the authorized biography, gives 1912. Current Biography Yearbook 1979, which does thorough research, also states his birthdate as 19 February 1912. But Michael Sparke, Stan Kenton: This Is an Orchestra! (2010), suggests that the date was changed to hide Kenton's premarital conception: "The baby was christened Stanley Newcomb (Stella's maiden name), his birth certificate quoting 120 South Fern Street, Wichita, Kansas, as the birthplace, and December 15, 1911, as the date... To complete the cover-up, when the family returned to Colorado, the boy's birthday was stated as February 19, 1912, a date Stanley believed to be true until well into adulthood." The Social Security Death Index agrees with the 1911 date, but does not give an exact date of death.
