Executive summary: Superconducting quantum interference

John Clarke has conducted extensive research into superconductivity (increased electrical conductivity in some metals when chilled to temperatures approaching absolute zero). He has designed super-sensitive magnetometers (devices which measure magnetic fields) called superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs), machines which have practical applications in astronomy, biological and geophysical measurements, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), materials testing, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and quantum computing.
