After their wedding he became her most trusted advisor, especially on matters of foreign affairs and social policy, and acted as her unofficial private secretary. He took a strong interest in science and technological matters, and organized the 1851 Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations, a world's fair that drew six million visitors to London's Hyde Park. In 1861 he inserted himself into a diplomatic row between England and the United States, and his influence is widely believed to have prevented a third war between these nations. He died that same year at the age of 42, and after his death the Queen withdrew from public appearances for several years and wore black to indicate mourning for the remainder of her life. Prince Albert is the namesake of Royal Albert Hall in London. [1] Announced as typhoid, but now generally believed to have been stomach cancer.
