Toshihide Maskawa Born: 7-Feb-1940 Birthplace: Aichi Prefecture, Japan
Gender: Male Race or Ethnicity: Asian Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Physicist Nationality: Japan Executive summary: Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix Physicist Toshihide Maskawa predicted the existence of three families of quarks (sub-units of protons and neutrons), and with his friend and frequent collaborator Makoto Kobayashi helped explain anomalies in the laws of physics. The two men also developed the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix (also known as the KM matrix or CKM matrix), which seeks to explain the varying quantum states of quarks propagating freely vs their states when taking part in the weak interactions. Maskawa, Kobayashi, and Yoichiro Nambu shared the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2008. Wife: Akiko Maskawa
University: BS Physics, Nagoya University (1962) University: PhD Physics, Nagoya University (1967) Professor: Physics, Kyoto University
Nobel Prize for Physics 2008 (with Makoto Kobayashi and Yoichiro Nambu)
